How Did the Ship Get Into the Bottle?

If you were a sailor on a ship, what would you do when you weren’t working?Except when there’s a storm a sailor doesn’t have to work all the time. So what would you do?You could read or sleep. You could talk with your friends-if they weren’t working. Or you could walk around the deck and look at the sky and ocean. But on a long, long trip you would probably get tired of these things.

Many sailors spend their spare time cutting or whittling things out of wood. Some sailors patiently carved small models of big things. A sailor made this model of a ship and put it in the bottle. Some people think that after the ship was made, it was taken to a bottle factory and that a bottle was made around the ship. What do you think?

First the sailor whittled out all the different parts of the ship. Then carefully he fitted each part to the next one. He cut the sails out of cloth and fastened them to the big masts, and to the little masts, called spars.Then he rigged the ship-fastened strings between all the masts and spars and sails to hold them in their proper places.

The masts and spars were too big to go into the bottle any way except endways. So he placed the masts right next to their holes and let them lie back flat on the ship’s deck. Then so-o-o-o carefully he slid everything endways into the bottle.Now we’re ready for the big trick. Before the sailor slid the ship into the bottle, he tied a special long string to the masts and let end of the string hang out. With the ship snugly inside the bottle, he pulled the string and presto-up came the masts and sails.

After the sailor cut the string off there was no way to tell how the boat got into the bottle. It looked as if it had always been there. Sailors also used to carve pictures in their spare time.The oldest carvings of ship models that we know about were made by the Egyptians-the same people who made the great stone pyramids

Far south in the ocean there are beautiful islands where palm trees and shining green plants grow. In the sun and the rain the plants grow fast and big. The people in these South Sea islands make toy boats for their children from the nuts and seeds dropped by these giant plants.

Traveling on Water

The very first boat in the world…what was it?A log? That’s a pretty good guess. A man could sit on a log and go floating down a river. If he paddled with his hands he could make the log go a tiny, tiny bit faster. He could even turn it slowly. But a log can flop and make you go plop. Splash! You’re dripping wet.

Maybe one day someone tied three or four logs together with vines. This made something called a raft. A raft doesn’t tip easily-but it moves no faster than a log and it is hard to steer. One day someone tried making a hollow place in a log where he could sit and where he could carry things. It seemed like a good idea, and other people started making these log boats. Sometimes the hollow place in the log was burned out with fire. Sometimes it was dug out with sharp sticks and stones.People stopped using their hands for paddles. They used a flat stick instead. This made their log boat go faster.

Nobody knows who was first to put a sail on a boat. Maybe it was someone who saw a leaf being blown along on top of the water. We don’t know what was used for the first sail. Maybe wide, tough leaves or woven grass. Maybe wide pieces of bark or bamboo. Whatever it was, people found that sailing was faster and easier than paddling.

Finally someone built a ship that used a sail and long paddles, called oars. When there was no wind, the sailors rowed with the oars. When the wind blew in the same direction they were going they put up the sail. Later, sailors learned to turned, or set, a sail to make the boat go in almost any direction they wished.

People learned how to build sailing ships with masts so high they seemed to touch the sky. These ships had so many sails that oars were not needed. After many years of sailing, people found a still better way to make boats move. They used paddles again but this time they put paddles in a wheel that was part of the boat. When the paddle wheel moved, the boat moved whether the wind blew or not.

Some of the paddle wheels were as big as a house! They were much too heavy to turn by hand.People had to use something new to make the paddle wheel turn. They use steam. Steam turned an engine and the engine turned the paddle wheel. Steamboats with their tall chimneys puffing smoke and their steam whistles going toot-toot, sailed up and down the rivers and across the lakes and oceans all over the world.

Today there are many more kinds of engines that can make boats move. There are huge, fast ships with engines somewhat like those used in the big trucks that go roaring over the highways. Some boat engines even run with atomic power. But all of the old kinds of boats are still used too-sailboats, rowboat, canoes and rafts. Not very many people ride on a log anymore. But you still can if you want to.

Danger! Sharks!

This man is taking photographs of the beautiful, bright colored fish that live in the ocean. Suddenly he sees a giant shape. It looks at first like a long dark shadow. The man doesn’t wait to see any more because he knows that this big shadow thing is really a shark and some sharks eat people! Because some sharks are dangerous a wire net is stretched along the shore, out in the water, at beaches where sharks have been seen. This keeps the sharks away and makes it safe to swim there. Many large beaches have been made safe for swimming.

Sharks aren’t everywhere in the ocean and not all sharks are man eaters. But these great white sharks are. They are so fierce that fisherman call them tigers of the sea. It’s hard for a man to fight them because they are such strong, fast swimmers and have bodies that are protected by a tough skin covered with tiny, toothlike bones. In their big mouths are rows and rows of sharp teeth that rip like the edge of a saw. White sharks make a quick meal out of almost anything!

You can even make them into a necklace.The meat of shark is good to eat. But there are more sharks caught than people want to eat, so some shark meat is made into fertilizer. Farmers put fertilizer on their land to help things grow. Even the fins of shark are good for something. People in China use them to make a soup.

拉蒂花职位非国会委任,应重查明福案彰显改革决心

公正党前法律局主任受委反贪会主席,在马来西亚政治圈引起震撼,事关拉蒂花职位受委并非如同希望联盟宣言所指出的“反贪会应成为独立机构,并且向国会负责和报告“的理念有违背。再加上拉蒂花实际上除了是公正党法律局主任之外,她也是公正党中委,属于政党的最高领导层,因此难免出现不中立的观感。虽然拉蒂花在较后表示她已经退出公正党,但并不意味着这次的委任完全合情合理。

因此,民主行动党社青团署理团长张玉刚也在较后发出文告冀望她能够大刀阔斧改革反贪会,加强打击国内各级的贪污风气及文化,包括对赵明福命案重新展开纪律调查,严厉对付涉案的反贪会官员。他表示,赵明福是在2009年7月16日进入反贪会大楼录取口供,就一去不返,最后发现陈尸在反贪会大楼。上诉庭已裁决赵明福是被人致死,而不是悬案,因此身为涉案单位的反贪会也应该遵守法庭的判决,对涉案官员展开纪律调查,以实际行动还赵明福一个公道和正义。

“社青团拒绝遗忘这宗惨案,大好青年无辜丧命,赵家失去儿子和兄弟、爱妻丧失至爱、遗孤从未见过爸爸、行动党失去优秀党员。一切都源自于前朝国阵政府及反贪会的政治阴谋,造成一个幸福美满的家庭遭受一辈子的苦痛和哀恸。”他指出,涉及赵明福命案的数名反贪会官员不只是仍逍遥法外,有的甚至升官发财,这让人无法接受。拉蒂花过去曾经与雪州政府共事,必定十分清楚前朝政府和反贪会针对希盟政府的政治迫害,而赵明福也正因为反抗这一场政治迫害而无辜牺牲,因此反贪会对涉案官员展开纪律调查是刻不容缓。

张玉刚强调,赵明福的家人和至亲好友经过10年的漫长等待,终于斗争至政党轮替,所以各个执法及涉案单位不应再拖延寻找真相及对罪魁祸首绳之以法。

马来西亚四月出口与进口率增长,第二季GDP将强健增长

马来西亚 2019 年 4 月份出口增长 1.1%,达到 852 亿令吉,打破了彭博社的市场预估将衰退 2.1%,与此同时,4 月份的进口增长了 4.4%,也一样打破了彭博社市场预估将衰退 0.3%。马来西亚出口经过了连续 2 个月稍微减少之后,2019 年 4 月份出口与去年同期 842 亿令吉相比增长1.1%,达到852亿令吉(表一),打破了彭博社的市场预估将衰退2.1%。

增长的主因来自于国外对马来西亚电子与电气产品、石化与天然气产品的强劲需求。即便当前世界两个最大的经济体正在展开贸易战,马来西亚的出口仍有所增长,足见马来西亚在全球舞台的竞争力。马来西亚今年 4 月的总体贸易额也获得增长,与去年同期比较,增长了 2.6%,从去年1555 亿令吉增长至今年的 1595 亿令吉。表一: 马来西亚 4 月份对外贸易

第二季 GDP 国内生产总值强健增长的良好征兆。同样重要的是,4 月份的进口额与去年同期增长了 4.4%,比彭博社作出的市场预估将衰退 0.3%,超出预期的好。 进口增减是最能反映出国内本地需求,如今进口增长表示私人消费增长,同时也预示第二季 GDP 将强健增长。4 月的进口相应增长也表示本地需求正在增长,这是随着马来西亚打破彭博社的市场预估 4.3%,创下第一季 GDP 按年同期增长 4.5%而来。

与此同时,进口数据显示,第二季经济将有所增进。2019 年 4 月的消费产品进口按年同期强劲增长了 18.9%,这是伴随 3 月消费产品进口也强稳同期增长 10.5%而来。除了消费产品,更令人鼓舞的是我国中间产品进口在 3 月的 3.2%微涨之后,4 月份来个20.3%按年同期的大跃进。中间产品是需再加工成为最终产品的半制成品。 消费产品与中间产品进口的强劲增长皆指向第二季的 GDP 将强健增长。

今年 4 月份的通货膨胀率相当稳定,同比为 0.2%,而 3 月份的失业率低至 3.4%,至于本季度工业生产预期则持续增长。在如此情况下,产生了上述正向的贸易发展。尼尔森 2019 年第一季度的消费者信心指数也显示,马来西亚消费者对未来 12 个月的经济前景充满信心,因为该指数从一年前的 104 点飙升 11 点至 115 点。

来往户头今年持续出现盈余。出口的改善使马来西亚在 2019 年 4 月创造了 109 亿令吉的贸易顺差。这使马来西亚在 2019 年前 4 个月的贸易顺差总额达到 478 亿令吉。相比之下,去年 1 月至 4 月期间的盈余略低,为 464 亿令吉。年初至今的顺差将有助于保持马来西亚的年度来往账户保持盈余。这将使国家在遭受外部因素诸如破坏力甚大的贸易战冲击时,不会造成过度的波动。

到目前为止,马来西亚从贸易战中受惠
迄今,因为贸易战而出现的贸易及商业转移潮,让马来西亚从中受惠。日本金融机构野村证券最近将马来西亚列为继越南、台湾和智利之后贸易转移的第四大受益者。除了贸易转移导致出口增加外,马来西亚可能会受益于全球供应链重组带来的投资转移。有关转移已经反映在已获批的外国直接投资中,2017 年大马的外国直接投资额为 544亿令吉,2018 年增加 48%至 805 亿令吉。
