The World of Water

If you live in the middle of a big country, you may never have seen much water. You may find it hard to believe that much more than half the Earth is covered by water. If you live on a small island in the middle of the ocean, you may find it hard to believe that so much of the Earth is land. But if you were an astronaut circling high above the Earth, you’d see that there is more water than land. You’d see with your very own eyes how the land and the water are divided.

The next best thing to being an astronaut is pretending to be one when you’re looking at a globe. A globe is a world map that’s round-more perfectly round than the world is. You see lots of blue on the globe. The blue is for water and the green is for land. Big chunks of land divide the blue. These big chunks look like pieces from a giant jigsaw puzzle. These big pieces of land are called continents. The waters around the continents are called oceans. The continents have names so do the oceans.

Which continent do you live on? Which oceans are near your continent? Even though most of the land on Earth has been explored you can still become an explorer under the ocean. To help learn more about the deep, dark, silent, underwater world, scientists have made machines to send back echoes from the bottom of the ocean. Scientists use the echoes to figure out how deep it is without going down there to find out. But it’s also possible to go down to the bottom.

People can go down inside a metal ball called bathysphere. They can look through windows to watch fish and other ocean creatures. Some bathyspheres even have a door so that people can step outside, breathing from a tank of air and go walking on the ocean floor. If people want to go still deeper under the ocean they can go in a bathyscaphe. This is a special kind of submarine that can move around and explore the ocean in very deep places.

People used to think that the bottoms of the oceans were just about as smooth and flat as the bottom of a swimming pool. But now we know that under the oceans there are plains and valleys, mountains and canyons. Some of the mountains are even higher than any on the land.Every year we are learning more about the ocean floor and we are making maps of it. Far under the ocean everything looks dark and still. On top the water never stops moving. Sun shines on it and makes it sparkle.

Its blue green colors seem to change with the curl and lift of every wave. The ocean breeze make you feel cool and clean. The sounds of the water gently splashing on the shore or crashing against great rocks are as much fun to listen to as a thousand tunes. And there’s the fresh salty air of the sea to smell and taste while you run and splash in the waves at the seashore. Because of the oceans you have a better life wherever you are-even if you live too far from the ocean to spend a day at the beach. The oceans provide food for you. They are broad highways for ships that bring useful and beautiful things from many other lands. The waters of the oceans add moisture to the air-the air make clouds-the clouds make rain-the rain keeps you plants blooming.

City of the Golden Sands

Gold!Gold!Gold!
Gold, in the very sands of the seashore! Gold, some said, even clinging to the anchors of ships offshore! All across the world, men heard about the new gold being found in Alaska. Thousands upon thousands hurried there, seeking their fortunes. Hundred of tents lined the beach. Supplies were piled high. Under the northern lights on the shore of the icy sea, men built a town and called it Nome.

Lumber for wooden shacks and stores arrived by sea from ports thousands of miles away. Eight months of the year the freezing Arctic winter locked these men in away from the world. A bowl of soup cost a dollar. Just one egg might cost as much as a dollar and a half. Hothouses were built to grow vegetables and flowers. Nome for a while was the richest, wildest most exciting gold town in the world.Nome is in Alaska but the Alaskan gold rush didn’t start in Alaska. It started in Canada near the Klondike River just over the border from Alaska. A man called Siwash George found the first gold.

https://www.facebook.com/kiniyoutube/videos/342983069895581/

When the news reached Seattle, Washington people there flashed it all over the world by telegraph:”Gold fund in the Klondike! Richest strike ever known!” Thousands of men quit their jobs and left their families to find gold. Few even knew where the Klondike was. Most went by ship to Skagway, an Indian trading post in Alaska. From there they set out for the Klondike in Canada,by horse, by dog team or on foot. To reach the Klondike men had to go through one of the two high mountain passes. Men with packhorses took the longer trail called White Pass. So many horses slipped off the trail’s icy ledges that the gulch below was called Dead Horse Canyon.

Even more dangerous was the other trail, Chilkoot Pass. It climbed so steeply that many gold hunters couldn’t take all their supplies to the top in a single trip. They had to make several trips, carrying only a little at a time. Steps had to be chopped in the ice. Slides of snow and rock sometimes came crashing down. In one such avalanche nearly 60 of the struggling climbers lost their lives. But thousands made it. Once over the mountain passes, the prospectors as these hopeful miners were called, built boats. They went on across lakes and down rivers, through whirlpools and white foaming rapids. More lives were lost. But those who lived came to Dawson on the Yukon River in the gold rich Klondike.

Dawson was a roaring mining camp. Fortunes were made from panning gold in the rivers and creeks. Fortunes were also made and often lost in the gambling halls and in trading and selling. One man brought in cow by boat. He sold its milk for $5 a cup! Another man arrived with a newspaper. It told of the sinking of the battleship Maine, the event that started the Spanish-American War. He sold the paper for $160. The man who bought it charged everybody a dollar to hear him read it aloud in a tent. Before more papers arrived by dogsled and boat, the man had made more than a thousand dollars.

From the Klondike the gold miners swarmed all over the far north. Some struck it rich. Many others didn’t. Sooner or later most of them went back home. But thousands fell in love with the vast Arctic wilderness. They stayed to become fur trappers and farmers and storekeepers. They settled the lonely land that today is the state of Alaska. Nome is still there. But most of the gold seems to be gone. Now Nome is a quiet little Eskimo town, known for its fur and ivory production.

Where Am I?

I am standing on a riverbank, and the river sounds like thunder. People can hardly hear themselves talk. The earth shakes under my feet-at least it seems to. In other parts of the river the water flows quietly. Boats float on the river’s calm surface. People swim in its gentle waters. But not along this part of the river. Here the water rushes by like an express train, and nobody dares go into it.

The reason is that not far from here the river plunges out of sight. With a mighty roar, it simply disappears in a cloud of spray and mist. The river plunges down to form some of the largest waterfalls in the world. Measured together, they are almost a mile wide. These failing waters are so powerful that they have dug out hole or a basin as deep as the falls are high. The force of the water has also created a cave-called Cave of the Winds-in the rock behind these falls.

After going over the falls, the water beats against the rocks and forms a giant whirlpool. But even so two little steamers, each called Maid of the Mist can take visitors close to the foot of the falls. Can you guess the name of this wild river? It flows between two countries. Canada is on one bank. The United States is on the other. The biggest part of the falls in Canada is called the Horseshoe Falls because it has the shape of a giant horseshoe. The other part is the American Falls. The river is the Niagara and the falls take their name from the river. It seems hard to believe but men have gone over the Niagara Falls in a barrel-a specially built barrel and lived!

Where Am I?

Hello! My name is Gordon. I am in a boat, floating silently through a bug cave called Waitomo Grotto. Most caves are dark and scary but this cave is lighted by millions of little insects called glowworms They cling to the wall and ceiling of the cave and shine like Christmas tree lights. And if someone makes a noise do you know what glowworms do? They turn off their lights!

Waitomo Grotto is in country far on the other side of the world from where you live-an island country in the South Pacific Ocean. The first people who lived here were the brown-skinned Maoris. They lived in tribes, hunting and fishing and sometimes fighting with each other. Their picture carvings in wood and stone tell many stories about their life long ago.

When the white settlers came, they brought the laws and customs of Great Britain with them…and now the two peoples live together peacefully. Most of us live in busy cities, ride in cars and buses and go shopping in big stores. If you should come to visit me in your vacation, be sure to bring your camera. There is so much photograph-snow covered mountains, blue mountain lakes and deep rivers rushing to the sea.

You would also see flatlands where dairy farms produce milk, butter and cheese. And highlands where millions of sheep are raised. If we visited Auckland our biggest city, we would see wool, meat, butter and cheese being loaded into big ships. At the zoo in Wellington, I would show you our funny, shy kiwi bird. It has hardly any wings or tails and lays an enormous egg.

Where Am I?

I am a city that is built mostly on islands. My daddy says that the main island was the biggest bargain in history. A very long time ago-about 300 years- the island was bought from the Indians for 24 dollars’ worth of colored beads. Now that same island holds part of the largest and richest city in the United States.

The city has more tall buildings than any other city anywhere. Some are so tall they are like a hundred houses placed, like blocks one on top of another. When I rode in an elevator to the observation tower near the top of one of these buildings, I could look out and see all of the city, some of the ocean and way into the nest state. The islands of this city are connected to each other and the mainland by great, long bridges. At night, when the bridges are lighted up, they look like a giant lady’s necklace stretched out from one shore to the other.

People in this city often travel in subway trains. These are fast trains that run on tracks in tunnels underneath the streets. The trains roar through the tunnels like a whole zoo full of lions. This city is the home of the UN, or the United Nations. People from almost all the countries in the world meet together at the UN to try settle the world’s problems and keep wars from starting.

This city is a kind of “united nations”itself, because people from every country live in it. People arrive in boats and planes from Africa, from China and Japan from India and the islands in the Pacific Ocean. There are people from Mexico and South America and Puerto Rico. There are even a few Eskimos and some American Indians. There are people from all the countries of Europe. A trip of this city is like a trip around the world. This city is New York.

Free Aquarium

If there’s a pond nearby and an empty jar in your mother’s cupboard, it will be easy for you to make a fine, absolutely free aquarium. Simply fill the jar with pond water, making sure that you leave room for a spoonful of mud from the bottom of the pond and for a dead leaf or two. For the first few hours your jar of pond water will not look much like an aquarium. But when the stuff floating in the water has settled to the bottom, you just may see some plants and animals that are so small that most people have never seen them.

To see these plants and animals you must look at the water carefully and patiently. Or use a magnifying glass. One of the animals you just may see in your free aquarium is the hydra. It looks a little like an octopus even though it only has six waving and an octopus has eight. A hydra has a brown or green body that is about as long as the lead on a sharpened pencil.

You don’t have to be afraid of a hydra. About the only thing it can hurt is a water flea tinier than itself. Usually a hydra will attach its body to something solid-like the side of your glass or a bit of floating leaf. Its arms reach out, hunting for water fleas or other animals so tiny that you can’t even see them. When one of the hydra’s arms touches a flea, the stingers on that arm go to work. After the flea is stung, it can’t move. The hydra’s other arms grab it and put it into the hydra’s mouth.

Watching a hydra catch its food is exciting. But watching the hydra move from one place to another is fun, especially when it does cartwheels. A six armed cartwheel! Over and up and down…Over and up and down. Does your hydra have a little bump on its body? Slowly the bump grows a bud with arms of its own. Then one day when this bud becomes a hydra, it breaks off completely from the parent and leads its own life. You may need a magnifying glass to see whether there is a planarian in your aquarium.

A planarian is flat and thin. It is hard to tell which is the head and which is the tail. A planarian looks about the same all over except for two spots at one end.A planarian is not so much fun to watch as a cartwheeling hydra, but it can divide itself into two. It slowly grows another body on the end of its tail. This mew body then breaks apart from older planarian to become a new animal. If you see something in the water that looks like a long reddish hair, it probably a horsehair worm. It curls and uncurls and may grow to be longer than your foot. But it stays as thin as a hair.

If there is a snail in your jar, it may look at first like a tiny shell stuck on the bottom or the side of your jar. But if you are patient you may see two short “hairs” poke slowly out of the opening of the shell. These hairs are called tentacles. Snails use them for feeling and seeing. Each tentacle has an eye on its tip. A snail looks like a jigsaw puzzle that’s been put together wrong. A snail has only one foot, which is right under its stomach and right behind its mouth. For a snail this is very handy. It eats water plants by scooping them up with its foot and kicking them into its mouth!

There is plenty of food for the creatures in your pond water aquarium. In every drop of pond water there are thousands of tiny plants and animals. They are not even so big as a dot. They are so little that you could never see them unless you looked through a powerful microscope. But you know they are there. If they were not, the hydra, planarian, horsehair worm, snail, water fleas and other animals big enough for you to see would not be there.

An Apple, An Idea

When you throw a ball into the air, do you ever wonder why it always come back down? Why doesn’t keep going up,up,up? One man did more than wonder. He was Sir Isaac Newton and he lived in England 300 years ago. We don’t know for certain whether it’s true but there is a story about Isaac Newton that goes like this: One summer day as he sat under an apple tree, an apple fell down and struck him on the head. He picked it up, rubbed his head and started to wonder why the apple fell down instead up. Was some power or force pulling the apple to the ground- a force that no one could see?

It was a long time before he could answer this question. Today his answer is called the law of universal gravitation. It helps us understand how the Earth and the moon and the planets travel in the sky without bumping into each other. It explains why things feel light or heavy in our hands and what makes things fall to the ground.

VIDEO: Tun M DEDAH Sebab Tiada Keperluan Rujuk Raja Isu Pindaan Perlembagaan Sabah, Sarawak

What Isaac Newton decided was that everything pulls on everything else with a force no one can see. Heavy things pull harder than lights ones. The earth we live is much bigger and heavier than things on it. That’s why everything falls to the ground. The big, heavy Earth pulls the lighter things down with a force called gravity.

Gravity holds the whole universe together. The sun, the moon, the Earth, the other planets and all their moons-pull against each other and this holds them all in their special places in space. A ball fells heavy in your hand because the Earth is pulling much harder on the ball than the ball is pulling on the Earth. If you throw the ball into the air, it goes up a little way-then the Earth pulls to the ground. And Isaac Newton was the man who found out why.

Animals at Home

Not in a zoo and not in a circus. Can you guess where else you might see dangerous wild animals close-up and no fence or bars or anything else between you and the animals? In a park in Africa. It’s a park so big that it would take a man about a week to walk from end of it to the other. In the big park are mountains, forests, grassy plains, rivers, lakes and jungles. It’s the home for all the animals you see in this picture-and many others besides.

No one is allowed to shoot or catch or bother any creature that lives here. it’s their park-an animal park. A place where animals can live just about the way they did before men knew they were here. You can visit these animals in their park. It’s as exciting an adventure as you could have. The safest way to watch these wild animals is from a car or a jeep. Guides who work in the park know the best places to go, and they’ll take you. A jeep racing down a dusty road would frighten wild animals, so guide drives slowly and as quietly as possible.

Keep looking front and back and to every side. You never know what you might see. It might be a leopard napping in a tree or a mother lion with her cubs running ahead of the jeep. Elephants in a stream spraying each other with their long trunks. Antelopes and zebras galloping like racehorses through the tall grass. Most parks close at the end of the day. But not this one in Africa. Visitors are allowed to stay in camps or hotels right inside the park. They can sit around a campfire and talk about what they’ve seen during the day,or just listen.

Nighttime is the best time for listening to animal sounds-the cry of the hyenas looking for bones to pick, shrieking baboons, trumpeting elephants, grunting hippos, rumbling lions and great herds of wildebeests mooing like cows. You can hear wild parrots and other birds warbling and whistling and shrieking. Insects humming and buzzing. Monkeys chattering and calling from one tree to another. There are so many animals making noise at night that you couldn’t count them all.

Africa hasn’t always had animal parks. It hasn’t always needed them. There used to be room for both people and animals. But as more cities were built…and more farms cut out of the wilderness…and more and more roads built everywhere, there became less and less room for the animals. If an elephant trampled a farmer’s garden, the farmer sometimes shot it. And hunters came from all over the world to shoot the animals. Some shot them just because they wanted to kill something big. Others shot them to make money selling animal skins, elephant tusks, rhinoceros horns..

There were almost no places left in Africa where animals could roam freely and be safe from men. People who were friends to animals began to worry that soon there would be no wild animals left at all. So land was set aside where no hunting was allowed. There are special parks for birds and even some for snakes, crocodile and other reptiles. Mountain gorillas seem to do best in one small part of Africa. So that place is now a park.

Special schools were started to train men to be ranger guides. It’s their job to make sure that people don’t kill or steal or hurt any beast that lives in the parks. Let’s hope that Africa never gets too crowded for the animals and that we can always visit them.

The Little Corporal

Long ago there was a little boy who wanted to be a soldier more than anything else in the world. He played soldier by himself while his brothers and sisters played other games. Later he went to a military school and studied very hard. When he was still a teenager he became a soldier. But this small man wanted power. He wanted to tell people and nations and the whole world what to do. He kept on working and studying until he became a general in the French Army.

His name was Napoleon Bonaparte and he finally became emperor of France. He was famous as a general and as an emperor and for a while he won all his wars and became a national hero. But he was not a kind man. He could be charming when he wanted to be. But he was also rude and very cruel and many people died so that he could win his wars. Napoleon did one thing that was very important to the United States. He sold a huge piece of land in North America to the United States because he needed money to fight a war with England. This was called the Louisiana Purchase.

Even though the land cost a great deal of money, the United States got a bargain. Later, 13 states were made out of this one piece of land. By his own hard work, Napoleon rose to great power. Then things began to badly for him. He lost the Battle of Waterloo to England and his days of power and greatness were suddenly over. After his last defeat the British took him to the far off rocky island of St. Helena. There far from his family and country, he spent the rest of his lonely life.

Treasure House

Jeffrey is in a hurry to get dressed. Today he’s going somewhere special. He’s going to see the moon! Cecilia is excited too. She and her doll are going to visit an Eskimo’s home! Allen is glad this morning came. He’s off to see a dinosaur! Jeffrey,Cecilia and Allen are going to museum. Inside a museum you may see a real space satellite. The museum’s moon is only a model, of course. But it looks almost real enough to fool an astronaut.

Inside a museum you may see homes from different countries and different times. You may see a model of an Eskimo’s home called an igloo. Or a tiny room filled with rich metals and jewels and silk-just big enough for a doll like Raggedy Ann. You may see the skeleton of a dinosaur or a giant model of the enormous creature. A museum’s treasures come from everywhere. They are found or bought or given or made or borrowed so that everyone can come to one place to see them. Space capsules are sometimes given to museums after their journey into space. And scientists may make a model of the moon to go with a space capsule exhibit.

Workmen at the museum made the Eskimo’s igloo out of plastic blocks that look like blocks of snow. The museum sent explorers on an expedition to find the dinosaur bones. Then workers in the museum put the bones together again. There are different kinds of museums. At an art museum you see pictures painted by famous artists. At science museums you learn what things are made of and see how they work. At historical museums you take imaginary tips into the past and see how people lived long ago.

There are even museums called planetariums, where you can learn about the stars and planets and the mysteries of space. You can look up at a model of the sky, with its thousands and thousands of stars and watch the planet circling overhead. Museums are treasure houses that belong to you. They are paid for by taxes or by people’s gifts. Many museums are free to everyone who wants to visit them. Inside museums are people to help you find what you’re looking for and to answer your questions.

No matter how often you visit them, there’s always something new to see and discover in museums. Almost anytime is a good time to visit a museum. Some art museums have classes where you can learn how to paint. Some science museums have classes where you can learn how to build a telescope. Other museums have paintings or fossils that you can borrow, just as you can borrow a book from library. And other museums have story hours, puppets shows and dance programs.
