The Friendly Enemy

This bird is a crow.
That much we know.
But is it a friend?
Or is it a foe?

Most farmers especially those who grow corn think of the crow as a foe, or enemy. They do not like crows because crows eat newly planted seeds. There are not as many crows now as there used to be. At one time in the spring right after the seeds had been planted many a peaceful country field turned into a battlefield.

The farmers were on one side. And the crows in flocks of 100 to more than 1,000 were on the other side. For many years neither the crows nor the farmers ever really won these battles.

It was hard for farmers to get close enough to the crows to shoot them. Crows are among the smartest birds in the world with extra keen sight and hearing. And crows are very careful. While some crows are digging up seeds in farmer’s field, the other sit on the tops of the tallest trees all around the field.

Caw-caw-caw shrieks the first crow that sees the farmer coming. All the other lookout crows shriek caw-caw-caw too. Then all the crows in the trees and in the field fly away. Some farmers tried to fool the crows with scarecrows. Old clothes stuffed with straw were put in the fields. The farmers hoped the crows would think the scarecrows were real people. But the scarecrows didn’t seem to scare many crows away.

Some of the scientists who study birds think that it’s a good thing that all the crows have not been killed. They say these birds are our friends because they eat many insects that can harm or totally ruin farm crops. These scientist says that crows pay for the seeds they eat by killing such pests as grubs, grasshoppers and cutworms. Another good thing about crows is that they are easily tamed. They make good pets. Because of their keen eyes and ears, crows quickly learn the look and sounds of their owners. Crows can even be taught to say words.

The Big Lizards

If you see a long, mossy green log floating in the water, look carefully. It might not be a log. If you are in a hot, wet country, it might be a crocodile or an alligator.

Neither of these animals can breathe underwater, as a fish does, but each can hold its breath and swim underwater for a long time. Both have tough, thick skins to protect them from enemies, and a big mouthful of very sharp teeth.

To many people a crocodile and an alligator look alike. But in some ways they are different. Here is a rhyme about them.

While sailing down the river Nile,
I chanced upon a crocodile,
I knew him by his narrow nose,
His great long head, and scaly clothes.

Far away and some time later,
I sailed up to an alligator,
Though shorter than the crocodile,
He seemed to stretch about a mile!

Now, both these reptiles swim with skill,
And both of them will bite and kill!
Both have teeth as sharp as nails,
Snapping jaws and slapping tails.

They run quite fast on short, squat legs.
In sand and mud they lay their eggs.
And soon the small ones can be seen,
So tiny-but they grow up mean!

If you should ever have to go,
Where the monsters live and grow,
I think you’d better watch them float,
From the safety of a boat.

What Sings with its Wings?

You almost never, never see them.
They live where trees grow and where there’s water.
Their pleasant chirping goes on and on, all summer long.
Do you know what they are? They’re crickets!

Did you know that a cricket never opens its mouth to chirp? It raises its stiff, leathery front wings and rubs one over the other to make its high, creaking sound. It’s a loud sound for such a tiny fellow. Some crickets are as small as your thumbnail. Even the bigger ones could be carried in a teaspoon.

Only father crickets have music-making wings. The smooth wings of mother crickets make no sound. Both mother and father crickets have back wings, which some kinds of crickets use for flying. Most crickets travel by hopping and jumping. Some crickets eat only tiny insects, but others will eat almost anything. If one gets into your closet, it may make bigger holes in your clothes than moths would. Crickets have such strong jaws that they can even bite through leather.

Like other insects, a cricket has six legs. On its feet there are tiny claws that help it run along upside down on a tree limb or ceiling. You may see black field crickets more than others but you may find green, brown, whitish and straw colored crickets too.

Some crickets live in people’s houses. Other live under logs and leaves, loose stones and boards or in trees. Sometimes you can tell how warm it is by listening to the song of the crickets. Some crickets chirp faster when the weather is warmer. And guess where a cricket’s ears are-down near the joints of its front legs. Wouldn’t it be funny to hear with your knees?

Most crickets chirp only at night. When some crickets chirp, their song seems to come from somewhere else, so you can’t always find the cricket, even when you hear it chirping. In some places in the world, people like the song of crickets so much that they keep them in tiny cages as pets, just as they might keep singing canary bird.

More About Cowboys

Once there were no cows in America. Neither were there any horses. And because there were neither cows nor horses there were no cowboys. The first cows in America were brought from Spain by Columbus. The first horses in America also came from Spain.

The first cowboys were Indian slaves in Mexico. Many were branded on the cheek by their Spanish masters. They were branded even before their masters started branding cattle! These Indian cowboys were called vaqueros. Vaquero is the Spanish word for cowboy.Spanish masters brought their vaqueros from Mexico to California and New Mexico to tend their herds of cattle.

Almost everything our Western cowboy wore or did came from the vaqueros. The cowboy’s big sombrero, his chaps, his fancy high-heeled boots-all were Mexican. He learned from the Mexicans to mark his cattle by branding them. His broad saddle, with its handlelike horn, was Spanish.

His very talk, even now is filled with words that came from Spain or Mexico; Corral and bronco, lariat and rodeo. Canyon, mesa and mesquite and many more. There are different kinds of cowboys in the world. In snowy Lapland, cowboys are really reindeerboys. They herd reindeer instead of cattle. But just like American cowboys they catch the reindeer with lariats. They use reindeer to pull their sleds. Reindeer give them their milk, cheese and meat. Even their tents and clothes are made of reindeer hides.

In Argentina cowboys are called gauchos. Like American cowboys, the early gauchos seemed almost part of the horses they rode. Sometimes they even rode their horses right into stores to buy groceries. The gaucho’s hat was black. So were his baggy pants, which he tucked into his calfskin boots. His shirt was usually brightly colored and his broad leather belt was decorated with silver coins. In roping the gaucho could any cowboy in the world. But he was even better with his bola. This too was a rope but short with two or three ends to which leather covered stone balls were fastened. The gaucho threw this with deadly aim. It curled tightly around the ankles of a man or animal, or even around the long legs of wild rheas (South American birds something like ostrich only smaller)!

Who Takes Care of the Cattle?

Some people think a cowboy wears all those fancy clothes just because he likes the way they look. No, that’s not it at all. Everything a cowboy wears helps him be a better cowboy.

That big hat shades his face. In the rain it becomes an umbrella. He uses his hat to dip water and even to give his horse a drink. The red handkerchief around his neck is called a bandanna. Often he pulls it across his mouth and nose as protection from swirling dust when driving castle. Over his tight pants he wears a second pair called chaps. They are leather or woolly sheepskin. They keep his legs from being scratched when he is riding through cactus and brush.

His high-heeled boots keep his feet from slipping through the stirrups. And when he gets off his horse to rope a steer, he braces himself by digging the high heels into the ground. A cowboy does many kinds of work. Each spring and fall the calves must be rounded up for branding, and the cattle must be driven to railroads for shipping.

In between times a cowboy mends fences, trains horses and cares for sick or injured cattle. He’s even a good blacksmith and knows how to shoe his own horses! But most of the time he is in the saddle. In all kinds of weather he rides the lonely range, watching over all the cattle marked with his ranch brand. He has only his horse for company. He talks to the horse as if the horse were another person. They become close friends.

In earlier times the cowboy’s riding was done from the main ranch, or from the cabins spread over the distant range. But now he often takes his horse partway in a truck. Sometimes in winter when cattle are trapped in deep snow, he even drops hay for them from an airplane.

At night on cattle drives cowboys take turns riding around the resting herd, singing low songs to keep the cattle quiet. But sometimes a thunderstorms will frighten the cattle into a wild stampede. They run through the pouring rain, horns tossing and glinting in the lightning. The earth shakes with the pounding of their hooves and their loud bawling.

The cowboys race their horses to the front of the stampede. They shout, wave their raincoat slickers, even fire six-shooters. Unless they can turn the leaders and get the herd running in a great circle, the cattle will be scattered far and wide by morning. They may even stampede blindly over cliffs and kill themselves.

But once the herd is circling like an immense merry-go-round, it begins to slow down. The cattle crowd against one another and finally stop running. The cowboys continue to ride slowly around them, singing softly, until all is quiet again.

Summer Snowballs

The night before Katy went to Texas to stay on her uncle Matt’s farm, she had a funny dream. Her mother told her that Uncle Matt didn’t grow food on his farm. He grew cotton.

Of course Katy knew what cotton was. Her blue jeans were made of cotton and so were her T-shirt and socks. The curtains in her room were cotton so were the sheets on her bed. She knew that the bunny she took to bed with her was stuffed with cotton, because once it had split open and its stuffing had spilled out. But she never knew that cotton grew.

“Oh, they’re pretty!” Katy said,” May I pick some?”
“I should say not!” Uncle Matt laughed.”Those flowers will turn into cotton.”
“How can a flower turn into cotton?”
“You keep watching this summer. You’ll find out.”

Before there were machines to pick the cotton, people used to pick by hand. On some small cotton farms they still do. The cotton picking machine can pick almost twice as much cotton in just one hour as the fastest man can pick in a whole day.

Builders in the Sea

How can a tiny sea creature make a wall big enough to wreck a ship?
It doesn’t make the wall by itself-it has help from many other tiny coral creatures. Together they make this great seawall, or reef.

What is coral?
Coral is soft little animal that looks like a bit of jelly. And the hard little shell house that the soft little animals live in are called coral too. Under the ocean where the water is warm, coral grows in lovely ocean gardens. It grows in just about every color and shape you can think of. It may grow to look like lace, a fan, a leaf, the horns of a deer. Or it may grow together in a reef a hundred miles long.

No matter what coral grows to look like, it starts as a tiny, soft animal not so big as the end of your little finger. The baby coral swims through the water until it finds a place to build its house, and then it never swims again.

Using a special glue from inside its body, it sticks itself to a rock or to another piece of coral. Once it is stuck, it starts to build itself a house. It builds the house with a juice that comes out of its body and turns into a kind of stone. But if it never goes outside its house, how does the coral eat?

After many years there are so many coral houses built on top of one another and next to each other that the coral may grow into a great stone wall. The ocean waves wash sand between the coral reefs. Trees may start to grow in the sand. Now the coral is part of an island where people can live. Maybe airplanes will land on the island. People on the ships may visit it to buy coconuts.

Does this mean a computer is very smart? No.

You might even say that a computer is dumb. It can’t do even a simple problem like adding 2 and 2 unless some person plans it first. This means that if something unusual happens and a new problem needs to be solved, the computer is in trouble.

If a comet isn’t a star, what is it?
Some scientists think that a large part of a comet is water frozen into sleety ice and mixed with bits of iron and rock dust and perhaps a few big chunks of rock. When sunshine melts ice in a comet, great clouds of gas go streaming behind it. These clouds together with the dust make a bright, fuzzy- looking tail.

Most people have never seen a comet. No one knows how many comets there are. There may be billions of comets, but only a few come close enough for us to see. Even then it is not often that a comet comes close enough to be seen without a telescope.

How can trees change into something that looks like a rock?
Well, millions of years ago there were great, hot, swampy jungles in the world. The trees grew in water and spongy soil so close together that it would have been hard to tell where one tree started and another ended. Grasses and ferns grew as tall as some of the strange-looking trees.

When the growing things died or the wind blew them down, they partly decayed in the warm mud, and more trees and grasses grew in their place. Finally all this material decayed and became what is called peat.

Posted by Kini YouTube on Sunday, February 17, 2019

This kept happening for more years than you could count. Rivers, lakes and seas washed sand and soil on top of everything. Earthquakes shook the land and covered some of it still deeper.

Under all the weight of land the peat was slowly…slowly squashed so tightly together that it turned into coal. This coal is burned today to heat houses and help to make the steam and electricity that run factory machinery. But most of this coal is formed deep under the ground. How do we get it out?

lol

Posted by Kini YouTube on Saturday, February 16, 2019

Some of the coal is close enough to the top of the ground to be strip-mined. This means that giant shovel-shovels as high as a house and run by machinery-move along the top of the ground and strip, or shovel off, the dirt and rocks from above the layer of coal. After the coal is uncovered, it is broken up and loaded onto trucks or railroad cars.

When coal is deep down, tunnels or shafts are dug into the ground to reach it. In some places the coal is then brought out of the mine on long conveyor belts that keep moving the way an escalator does. In other mines the coal is hoisted up the shaft in cages, or elevators.

Electric lights make everything look a little like a small city at night. Offices and machine shops have been hollowed out of the coal. There are on broad ‘streets’, or ‘tunnel’, where tracks for the little coal-mine trains run in every direction.

To get to their working places, the miners ride in the empty coal cars far into the mine, where it is so dark that they have to carry lights with them. Most of the train tunnels are so narrow that the miners can reach out and touch the rough walls as the coal trains rear along.

Posted by Kini YouTube on Friday, February 15, 2019

For many years drills and black powder explosives were used to break up the coal so that it could be handled with a pick and shovel. Today coal-cutting machinery and machine loaders are used. After the coal has been put into the coal cars, it is taken to the mine opening, where it is removed and dumped into big railroad cars.

Coal has been called buried sunlight because of all the sunlight it took to grow the trees that later became coal. But there is no sunlight in a coal mine. Almost everything in a coal mine is black or hard or sharp or heavy.

Air is pumped into a mine for the miners to breathe. But sometimes the air doesn’t move as it is supposed to and different kinds of gas may collect. The gas can cause an explosion, or it can make the air unfit to breathe. Water can flood a mine. The coal can catch fire and fill the mine with smoke. Slate and rock can fall on the miners’ head. The coal cars sometimes run off the track. There is really no safe place in a coal mine. But the men who run the mines are always looking for safer ways to dig the coal.
