Where Does Ice Come From?

It was cold day in winter and Mark and his father were having a lot of fun ice-skating. Mark remembered the hot summer when they had gone swimming at this same little lake. In the summer the wind had made ripples on the water and when boys and girls jumped in, they always splashed up big waves. It was the same lake, but now it was so hard that the wind could not make ripples. And nobody could jump in. Even big people like Mark’s father were walking and skating right on top of the hard ice.

Mark picked up a little piece of ice cubes that came from the refrigerator at home.He asked his father,” Where did all this ice come from?”
His father thought a moment before he answered,” We’ll take some ice home with us, and I’ll show you where it come from.”Mark’s father borrowed a hatchet from some men who were chopping a hole in the ice in order to fish. With the hatchet he cut off a piece of ice and dropped it into an old pail.

“When water gets very cold,” Mark’s father said,” in the lake in winter or in our freezer, it turns to ice. Ice is solid and keeps its shape. Sometimes it becomes thick enough to cut into large blocks. Then the ice can be stored and used in iceboxes when the weather gets warm.
“Water is liquid and fits the shape of whatever it’s in- a cup, a bottle, a a pail or a lake.

When Mark and his father got home and brought the ice into the kitchen, Mark’s mother asked,” What in the world is that for?”
” Here, where it’s as warm as summertime, we’re going to see what the ice turns into,” Mark’s father answered. Mark watched the ice in the pail. The piece of ice slowly got smaller and smaller while at the same time there was more and more water in the pail. After a while all the ice had turned to water! Mark’s father poured some of the water into a pan and said,”Now it will change into something else.” He put the pan with the water in it onto the stove. Soon Mark cried,” It’s boiling!’

The pan was very hot-too hot to touch. The water in it was bubbling and sending up gray clouds that disappeared right away. There was less and less water just as there had been less ice when the ice melted. But now Mark could not see more and more anything. Mark’s father said,” When water gets very hot, it turns into steam- a gas-something that has no special shape or size of its own.

” When the sun is hot next summer, could it turn the lake into steam?” Mark wondered.
“No. Winter can get cold enough to freeze the water into ice, but summer never can get hot enough to make the water boil into steam. Water is always leaving the lake and mixing with the air, but we don’t see it as steam because it isn’t hot enough. But don’t worry. Rain comes down to take its place.
