What shape Is It?

The world around us is filled with objects that have many different shapes. We study these shapes in one part of math- a part called geometry. When we talk about these shapes in geometry, we use a special math name for each shape. Among your toys you probably have a ball or maybe some marbles. If you don’t have a ball or marbles perhaps you do have a globe. People use globes to see how the world is shaped and where the oceans, continents and the islands are.

In geometry the shape of these objects is called a sphere. Anything that is shaped like them is also a sphere, no matter how large or how small it is. Your drum and most of the cans your mother brings home from the grocery store are shaped very much alike. In geometry this shape is called a cylinder. Some blocks that children play with have a special shape. The geometry name for the shape is cube. Sometimes sugar comes in this cube sugar.

Another shape is called the same thing in geometry as it is in the ice cream store-a cone. Sometimes paper cups have a cone shape. If you and a friend stretch a jump rope between you it will be shaped like a line segment. A line segment has two ends just as a jump rope has.

If the jump rope could be stretched on and on forever in both directions so that it had no ends, it would be shaped like a line. A line goes on and on forever and has no ends. If you tie the ends of a jump rope together you can shape the rope like a circle. The wheels on a wagon are shaped like a circle, and so are bicycle wheels.

A jump rope with its ends tied can be made into a lot of different shapes. Three friends can pull on the rope to make a triangle. A triangle has tree sides and three corners. A rectangle has four sides and four corners and is shaped like the cover of this book. Four friends can stretch the rope to make a rectangle. If five friends pull on the rope, they can make a pentagon and if six friends pull o the rope the can make a hexagon.
