When a baby chicken starts to grow inside an egg, it is nothing more than a tiny spot. Three weeks later, just before it breaks out of its shell, the chick fills the whole egg. You can see that it has done a lot of growing!
The chick floats in a bag of watery stuff or liquid. The liquid keeps the chick from drying out and makes it easier for it to exercise its tiny muscles.

You might say that the chick has its lunch with in a bag called yolk sac. The yolk sac holds the yolk of the egg. The yolk is food that the chick uses while its growing inside the eggshell. Another bag is like a small bathroom and catches the wastes from the growing chick.
There is small air pocket at one end of the eggshell. A week before the chick is ready to crack its way out of the shell, its sticks its head under its wing and points it beak at the air pocket. Then, just two days before it is hatched, it sticks its head into the air pocket and begins to use its lung. About a day later it begins regular breathing.

The chick has a special sharp point, called the egg tooth, at the tip of its beak. With this point the chick pecks the shell many-many times before it finally breaks through. Once the chick has cracked a hole through the shell, it rests. The little open window lets it get used to the outside air. When the chick has rested, it may take several hours more for it to break the rest of the shell away and climb out.
