How would you like to visit an island far away in the ocean where great statues seem to stare at you wherever you look? Statues as high as tall trees!
Some of the statues are just enormous heads. Other show the upper bodies of people. They are made of stone and no one know for sure who made them. They are all stuck in the ground almost if they grew there. But they didn’t-they were moved there. The people who living on this island when it was discovered more than 200 years ago made up stories about the giant statues-where they had come from and who had made them.

On the island are wooden tablets-wooden boards with writing on them. The writing is not like any we know- there are pictures of people, birds, fish and plants and some pictures that seem to be just designs.Who were the people who live here long ago? are these statues of important people? Most of the huge heads were made flat to hold heavy crowns. Are they statues of ancestors or of gods?
Stone cutting tools have been found on the island. Cavemen used such tools, but cavemen didn’t live in houses and there are ancient houses on the island. Some of the houses are made of stones fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle. Nothing but the joints makes them stick together. There are stones so big and heavy that it must have taken many, many men to get them into place.

Someone, sometime worked very hard to help make these statues and buildings. And you can see them today if you travel on a boat or airplane to Eater Island in the Pacific Ocean.
